West Indies vs Afghanistan match was played at the turning pitch of Nagpur’s Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium. The mighty Windies were termed as the firm favorites for the game. However; Afghanistan put in their best efforts to grab victory from the jaws of West Indies. It could be termed as historic day for Afghanistan as they become the only team to beat the pool toppers by six runs in a thrilling low scoring game.
The West Indian Captain asked the opposition to bat first and restricted Afghanistan to 123 runs for the loss of seven wickets. Najibullah Zadran remained unbeaten with 48 runs off 40 balls. He hit four fours and one six.e
West Indies started their innings aggressively. Johnson Charles hit two massive sixes in the second over. Evin Lewis replacing Chris Gayle on his debut match could not persist and was dismissed by Amir Hamza. Charles was dismissed by Hamid on 22, stumped by Shehzad.
Bravo and Ramdin contributed 41 runs and took plenty of singles. It looked a promising partnership for a team chasing a low total. The stand was broken by Nabi when he dismissed Bravo in the 14th over. With wickets in hand, it looked as if West Indies would steal to victory as they required only 40 runs in 35 balls. But Ramdin could not preserve and was stumped by Rashid in the 16th over.
Nabi bowled the final over, starting with two dot balls before he got rid of Brathwaite caught beautifully by Zadran. West Indies required 10 runs in 03 balls which ended up in only 03 singles. Hence, Afghanistan claimed a historic win over a tough opposition. Afghanistan celebrated every wicket with a classic Gayle dance which fittingly ended up in their victory dance with Gayle himself.
Now it is confirm that West Indies will take on either India or Australia in the Semi Finals.
