It was during 1981/82 when Australia, Pakistan and West Indies were involved in World Series Cup that was held in Australia. This was the 13th match of the tournament when Pakistan and West Indies faced off each other. Clive Llyod, the West Indies skipper, won the toss against Javed Miandad and his men and elected to bowl first.
Pakistan were off to a pretty sedate start as they were quite circumspect while facing the menacing West Indies’ bowling attack that comprised of Holding, Garner and Roberts. They somehow achieved to put 177 runs on the board in their 50 overs but the target for West Indies was revised to 107 runs off 30 overs due to weather condition.
Imran Khan started off the bowling from Pakistan. He conceded 3 wide deliveries in the first over to start with. His bowling partner, Sarfraz Nawaz straightaway made an impact as he removed Greenidge and Viv Richards in a single over to give Pakistan a ray of hope. West Indies kept on losing wickets after wickets and none of their batsmen really looked settled while on the crease.
Sikander Bakht continued to impress with the ball after Sarfraz Nawaz gave Pakistan a brilliant start with 3 wickets. The former triggered the collapse and bowled well to pick 3 wickets. There was only one batsman who was standing between Pakistan’s win and he was Faoud Bacchus who was involved in small yet effective partnerships.
Even after losing partners from other end, he kept on playing his shots to guide his team to an unlikely victory by just 1 wicket to also grab the M.O.T.M award. In a nutshell, Pakistani bowlers portrayed determination, immaculate willpower and near-perfect attitude and fighting spirit to go fighting till the last ball of the match. Credit should be given to Faoud Bacchus for his brilliant and match-winning knock as well.
