The first official ascent of Mount Everest was made in 1953 by Tenzing Norgay & Edmund Hillary and for reaching to this world’s tallest mountain they used the southeast ridge route. The history of expeditions of this mountain is very horrible because it took the lives of 223 mountaineers while climbing due to the horrible winds (beyond 200 mph), avalanches and blizzards.
K2 is the 2nd highest mountain in the world which is located on the border between Gilgit-Baltistan (Pakistan) and Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County of Xinjiang (China). Located at the height of 8,611 meters above the sea level, it is very difficult to climb as the past record suggests that one in every four mountaineers have died while attempting the summit. Due to its natural location it is extremely difficult to climb from the Chinese side, that’s why the mountaineers like to climb from the Pakistani side. Till now from the 246 summits, 55 deaths have been recorded and during winter it has never been climbed in the history. Actually the name K2 was derived by using the trigonometric survey where Thomas Montgomerie was the person who made the 1st survey of the Karakoram 130 miles to south. There he drew a sketch of the two most prominent peaks by given the names as K1 & K2.
Kangchenjunga is the 3rd highest mountain on the earth which is located between eastern Nepal & Sikkim India. Kangchenjunga is 8,586 meters high above the sea level that was first climbed by Joe Brown and George Band on 25 March 1955 and both of them were the members of British Expeditions. It was considered in the past until 1852 that Kangchenjunga is the world’s highest mountain but after the research and calculations of 1849 Great Trigonometric Survey, it was confirmed that Mount Everest which was known as Peak XV at that time was the world’s highest. Fritz Luchsinger & Ernst Reiss were the first mountaineers to make the first ascent on 18 May 1956 and that group was from Switzerland. Located between the border of Nepal & China, Makalu is the 5th highest mountain in the world which is 8,463 meters (27,766 ft) high from the sea level. Makalu is the Nepal’s official name while in Chinese it is said Makaru. Basically it is at 19 Kilometers southeast of the Mount Everest from Mahalangur Himalayas. Makalu has also two other highest peaks which are known as Kangchungtse and Chomo Lonzo located at 7,678 m & 7,804 m respectively. This 7th highest mountain in the world is located in Dhaulagiri range just north of central Nepal 8,167 meters (26,795 ft) above the sea level. The Northeast ridge is the easiest point for climbing to this highest & tallest mountain. On 13 May 1960 the team of Australian, Swiss and Nepali made the first ascent in the history. The first winter ascent was made by Jerzy Kukuczka & Andrzej Czok on 21 January 1985.
Located at the elevation of 8,163 meters (26,781 ft), Manaslu is the 8th highest mountain in the world which was first climbed by a Japanese team on 9 May 1956. This one of the tallest mountain is situated in Lamjung District, Gendaki Zone (Nepal) which is basically the range of Mansiri Himal (Himalayas). Its name Manaslu comes from the Sanskrit which means Mountain of the Spirit (Manasa means Intellect). It is also called as the Japanese mountain as the British considers Everest their Mountain.
Located in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, Nanga Parbat is the 9th world’s highest mountain having the height of 8,126 meters (26,660 ft) and is the range of Himalayas. The local people call it as Deo Mir. This one of the eight-thousanders Mountain is extremely difficult to climb, that’s why many deaths of mountaineers have been reported in the past especially in the mid & early 20th century. The people recall it as the killer Mountain as well and it is one of those mountains along with K2 who are not climbable in winter. The 1st person who officially climbed to this Mountain was Hermann Buhl on 3 July 1953. The West face (Diamir) is the easiest route for climbing.
Annapurna is located at 8,091 meters above the sea level and is the 10th highest mountain on the earth. Annapurna is a massif in the Himalayas that is in the North central Nepal. Besides Annapurna, there are 13 peaks over the height of 7,000 meters and 16 more are located on 6,000 meters. The whole area of massif is of 55 km long where the entire massif and the surrounding area of Annapurna are protected by the Government of Nepal. The Annapurna Mountain is considered as one of the extremely dangerous mountains to climb and the figures tells from only 1990 the fatality rate are higher after Kangchenjunga.
